COVID

Short Story

As COVID spikes in New York and once again throws the future into uncertainty, artists and freelancers are getting sick and losing work.

This is an especially serious situation for freelancers because most freelance work does not have the luxury of being done remotely. There is no paid time off, sick days or any kind of compensation guarantees for missed work when you’re a freelancer. In the gig economy; If you’re not at work, you’re not getting paid. Having to suddenly take an extended period of time off to quarantine with no pay is a severe financial hit for most people navigating an already precarious reopening without a safety net. This is unfortunately placing the burden of making the difficult choice on affected freelancers between staying home while waiting for results or going to work, while possibly contagious, in order to pay rent.
The aim is to raise $100,000 by December 25th to support those who have lost a significant amount of income due to this sudden spike to save them from the vicious cycle of backrent. We will work to distribute $500-$1,500, based on request and availability, to as many artists as possible before January rent is due.
Watching our communities experience this struggle firsthand prompted us to set out to collect existing pandemic relief resources for freelancers, only to discover that there aren’t any. Without the same financial aid that was available earlier in the pandemic, freelancers are being left to fend for themselves.
Our goal is to provide a safety net for artists/ gig workers to take the time to recover from Covid without experiencing a devastating financial hit as a result.

Thank you for your support! Artists are the people who make NYC the destination for culture and an epicentre of the country’s nightlife, theatre, and visual and performing arts. Let’s support one another.

Our previous efforts successfully raised over $10,000 for Mimi and Rod via Spread Karma and over $7,000 on Venmo via @UnicornFund
