Short Story

Welcome family.

My name is Luis Marrero. I am 32 years young and vibrant and a Philadelphia native. I am a father, a son, a brother, a friend… I am also an event curator, a spoken word artist, a business owner, and a professional encourager. I am the Founder of Voices In Power, LLC, of The Marketplace Philly, 501(c)3, and hopefully, if when we are successful (speak things into existence) in our crowd funding, the Founder of Seven:AM. Seven:AM will stand on three pillars: being an Event Space, a Community Center, and an Artists Home. I’ve been curating experiences with Voices In Power for over 10 years now, The Marketplace Philly for about 2 years, and I am blown away by what it’s become and who it’s helped me become. My heart has been filled and overflowing for years now and it’s thanks to all of our supporters, our community, and those we encounter through all of our efforts. My purpose in this lifetime is to serve and the people I am called to serve are artists and our neighbors in communities that aren’t receiving the love and light they deserve and so desperately need. And that is why I do all that I do and will always choose to do it in and with love.

If I could describe Seven:AM’s three pillars in a more creative way (you know, since I’m a poet and all), I would say our Heart is the Community Center, our Core is the Artists Home, and our Bones are the Event Venue.

Allow me to further explain – as mentioned above:

My heart is to serve and with that, serving the community and those in need will always be my priority. Starting my non-profit organization The Marketplace Philly was simply an extension of who I am at a heart level. We served hundreds of neighbors in the Kensington area with things like feeding them, clothing them, providing opportunities for them, and simply becoming friends with them. This same effort will apply in the Frankford area Seven:AM will be housed. We will host weekly feeding efforts and monthly community projects that will benefit the neighbors in our community from buying groceries and supply diapers/formula to those in need, to block cleanups and painting projects, to feeding and clothing those experiencing homelessness and drug addiction. This will be made even more possible with having our own space to be our Community Center (heart).

Our core are artists and their art. Honestly, without the two, the world would be bland, colorless, and lifeless… and that’s just boring. Through our organization Voices In Power, The Place Artists Call Home, we curate experiences a few times a month that make them feel like family. This alone is powerful. It brings people into a place of security of self, awareness of their worth, and freedom in being vulnerable. Our open mics alone have had more than 10,000 people in attendance, featured more than 3,500 artists/performers, and highlighted more than 800 small and local businesses and brands. This isn’t an event, nor is anything we do – it’s an experience and one you must experience in order to really understand how powerful the impact has on people. This will be made even more possible with having our own space to be our Artists Home (core).

And lastly, the bones of Seven:AM will be our event venue. It will host our in-house events, programming, workshops, and more, as well as for others. We curate two monthly experiences, currently, which will be held here, along with all of our community service projects, both weekly and monthly. This will be rentable and donatable space for other event curators, business owners, and even for families and corporate clients. Some of what is already currently planned are our Poetry Open Mic Experiences, Jam Sessions, movie and game nights, Small Business Saturdays, Forbidden Fruit Masquerade Charity Ball, Art Attack: Youth Art Gala, Food for the Soul Project, to list a few. This will be made even more possible with having our own space to be our Event Venue (bones).

We believe in what we are doing here, and we’ve proven over the past ten years that it’s something special. Ask anyone who’s been in attendance of one of our experiences, who’ve been a part of one of our workshops, who’s served alongside – you’ll find the responses to be similar. Us landing this space, Seven:AM, will take our next ten years to another level to do more, give more, be more. You’ve all supported us this far and we just ask that you continue to support us for more. Let’s continue growing, let’s continue impacting others, let’s continue being a family pushing forward. And we know $10,000 may seem like a lot to ask for, but it’s merely a drop in the bucket to all we have planned. This is only the beginning and we need your partnership to see us through.

Thank you in advance for your donations.

With love, always,

Luis
