Short Story

The Big 3 Trends

GreenSeed sits at the center of three huge trends that are evolving as we speak. First, after decades of intensive research and technological development, the cost of renewable energy has fallen so much that it is now competitive with traditional forms of energy. True, much work still needs to be done and researchers continue to develop new ways to harness tidal energy, or improve the efficiency of solar panels, but we have arrived at a critical pivot in the development of renewable energy. Solar, wind, hydro, and other alternatives will begin to surge in the coming years as their efficacy at large and small scale are proven, and traditional forms of investment flow into their deployment. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, we are concerned that those most in need of lower cost renewable energy will be the last to receive its benefits, such as low income and minority households.

This trend toward economic competitiveness is met at precisely the same time by another trend that continues to pick up momentum: interest in climate change solutions. For many the issue has grown in importance over time, but the last decade of intensifying weather patterns, droughts, farmland erosion, and more has led climate change to become a topic of national attention. It is encouraging to see so much attention bestowed on this critical subject, but the gears grind slowly and many people are in search of ways to use their own personal resources and actions to mitigate the effects of human-caused climate change.

Finally, a third encouraging trend has been emerging in the world of investing and personal finance. With the sudden development of zero-fee trading driven by Robinhood’s innovative business model, other major brokerages have been forced to follow suit and open the world of investing to people of all backgrounds. The response has been enormous, with record numbers of brokerage accounts being opened on major trading platforms. What’s more, the democratization of investment activity has been matched with a steadily increasing growth in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing in recent years. What does this mean for GreenSeed? Now more than ever, people are interested and willing to play a direct role in the development of industry with their own resources. The idea that they can participate in markets traditionally reserved for the wealthy or well-off means a new opportunity exists to tap into that energy and offer new ways to develop the renewable energy that is desperately needed today.

Community Ownership and Grassroots Change

Our belief is that there is not one single solution to climate change, but many smaller solutions working together. Although that means the complexity of so many different climate solutions can be hard to keep track of, it also means there is a huge amount of room for innovative new models like GreenSeed to make a difference.

By taking advantage of the falling costs of solar energy, and a collective desire to “get things done”, GreenSeed is the first to propose a platform that will enable crowdfunders to contribute directly to renewable energy projects. And that collective action is what makes the approach so powerful.

Incredibly, since 1988, 71% of all carbon emissions were produced by just 100 of the largest companies in the world. Those same companies are slow to adapt to the needs of society (in this case climate change) if a clear financial reward is not evident.

Meanwhile, individual action to mitigate climate change can be difficult and oftentimes simply unreasonable to ask of people. Is it fair to ask individuals to target an organic diet when sustainably farmed food is often not available or much more expensive? How can we ask low-income households to invest in expensive solar panels when healthcare and rent are more pressing concerns?

We believe systemic change comes from collective action – GreenSeed taps into that collective and lets individuals play a role in developing renewable energy for all. If we all row in the same direction we can accomplish great change.

Carbon Offsetting You Can Trust

Planting Eucalyptus trees like these have become one of the most

popular forms of carbon offsetting. But is there a better way?

Carbon offsetting has existed in different forms for years, and can be an effective way to alleviate some of a company or individual’s carbon emissions. However, it does not address the root problem of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. Instead, by offering ways to “offset” output, the system actually encourages the release of more carbon emissions, and discourages systemic changes, particularly at the corporate level.

For individuals, the money you dedicate to offsetting your personal emissions can often go towards programs that are opaque, lack accountability,  or even cause harm to the environment. Take as an example the common “plant a tree” offset. Although planting trees does help absorb many kilograms of CO2 over the lifetime of the tree, using this technique improperly can lead to monocultures, damaging local ecosystems.

GreenSeed offers a transparent alternative to offsetting carbon by investing directly in a renewables project that reduces our reliance on carbon-heavy energy. By donating to a renewable energy project, you can be sure your dollars will be used to directly prevent carbon emissions, not just offset them. And even including upstream (manufacturing, distribution, installation) carbon, solar photovoltaic has some of the lowest carbon emissions of any energy source available.

In addition, through GreenSeed’s platform, you will be able to directly track the energy produced by your share of the energy project, as well as view how much carbon would have been emitted by coal or Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) electricity in the area if the project had not been built.

What We Will Achieve

GreenSeed will use your support to:

  1. Construct a community solar garden for low and moderate income households in Mesa County Colorado

  2. Push towards a 100% renewable future by offsetting and replacing traditional carbon-based energy production.

  3. Create a new platform at GreenSeed to efficiently crowdfund many more renewable energy projections in the future.

The Build: Putting Our Panels Where Our Mouth Is

Why Mesa County? Colorado is at particularly high risk of the many ill effects of climate change, due to its unique geography. Parts of the state have already warmed beyond 2 degrees Celsius above average temperatures in the region. This warming means less precipitation in the mountains to irrigate farmland, and warmer, drier earth that speeds the rate of evaporation as water travels from mountains to the valleys below.

In addition to building projects where climate change is already affecting people’s lives, we also are dedicated to providing clean, renewable energy to low income households and in areas where grid electricity is from a higher mix of coal, petroleum, or gas power plants. We take both of these factors into consideration when our team identifies the most impactful places to install renewable energy.

In both these metrics, Colorado scores well. Colorado law requires a minimum 5% of energy generated each year being used by Low Income households, but we aim to go far beyond that and will target 100% low-moderate income households as subscribers for our community solar garden. Colorado also produced approximately 45% of its 2019 energy from coal, 30% from natural gas, and 25% from all renewables, of which 2.2% is solar.

Colorado’s Energy Production in 2019 (https://www.eia.gov/electricity/data/state/)

Our solar garden’s energy will be distributed to subscribers through the existing grid, in cooperation with the local utility provider in the region, Xcel Energy. Xcel Energy currently operates a solar community rewards program that enables developers to construct community solar, offering the benefits of solar to anyone in the region currently connected to the grid through Xcel Energy. If you’d like to learn more about the program, please check out their website here.

Our base goal is to provide a solar garden to support at least 3 households. Our funding goal is $20,000 USD of which $19,000 will go towards the purchase, installation, and application fees to start the community solar garden in partnership with Xcel Energy. The final $1,000 USD will be used for building GreenSeed’s online platform, and covering additional legal fees in creating the project. Any cost above and beyond our $20,000 goal will go directly toward expanding the size of the solar garden to benefit more households.

The Platform: Plugging You into Your Impact

Impact investing, or investments that take into account Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations has been growing steadily for years, but it still has a long way to go. In fact, GreenSeed was originally founded out of the frustration we felt from the lack of ways to invest directly in cleantech and renewable energy. Purchasing stock in a major solar provider only indirectly supports renewables – it does not directly lead to the creation of new energy projects. And investing in utility companies or oil and gas providers means taking the good with the bad – green initiatives are mixed with pre-existing business models that profit from carbon-based energy production.

Meanwhile many of the smaller and most innovative companies working to mitigate climate change deserve our attention, but usually are limited to accepting investments from accredited investors – those with at least $1M USD.

We want GreenSeed to solve this problem by constructing a platform to finance renewable energy and other green technologies. Although this platform will take time to develop, we are very excited by the possibility it will unlock. Not only will this platform create a new kind of opportunity for retail investors like you and me, but it will also connect us to the projects we support.

Like watching the local zoo’s Panda-cam (but admittedly a lot less cute), we want investors to be able to track the energy projects they back. We will be committed to full transparency in all our projects – there are no secrets here. In fact, we want you to be as proud of your new ownership in renewable energy as we are.

Thus, our platform will offer the following:

  • Advertise new projects for investors to browse

  • Track your stake in projects, receive updates (blog posts, images, videos), and track the energy generated as well as the carbon prevented by the project over time

  • Distribute returns to investors as a share of revenue generated

This platform will be the beating heart of GreenSeed and we hope that it will enable people from everywhere to take climate change into their own hands. It will not be easy, but with determination and dedication from the Greenseed team – and with your support – we are very much looking forward to a new future of democratized ownership of renewable energy.

GreenSeed Ventures is rethinking what the energy of tomorrow will look like. As the climate crisis continues to worsen, we know it is time to prioritize the transition to renewable energy. Help us accelerate that transition by unlocking the potential of innovative crowd funders and everyday investors just like you.

The effects of climate change reach far and wide, from the melting of arctic permafrost, to the eroding coastlines of coastal cities, to the desertification of farmlands we rely on for agriculture. While climate change is only one part of the broader impact we collectively have on the environment and planet, the sudden uptick in global temperatures and the potential destruction it will cause is something we have been aware of for over 50 years. Fortunately, this global challenge is also something that we can work to overcome together. We have seen many organizations and nations pledge to reduce their emissions through landmark agreements such as the UN Paris Climate Agreement and increased focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, Number 13: Climate Action, in particular.

Renewable sources of energy such as Wind, Water, and Solar (WWS) are mature technologies that reliably generate the energy we need without producing damaging atmospheric carbon emissions. After decades of innovation, they are now cheaper than traditional sources of energy such as coal or liquid natural gas (LNG). However, as with all energy projects, they require large initial capital to build at the scale necessary. That high up-front cost – as well as special interests from oil and gas – have limited the momentum of renewables.

That’s where you come in. Here at Greenseed, we will enable individuals to participate in the transition of our energy system instead of relying on the same companies that created the climate crisis.  GreenSeed will identify high-impact locations across the country where renewable energy projects could be of great benefit to consumers by lowering the cost of electricity and reducing dependence on carbon-heavy energy production. Then, we will open up the projects to everyday community members. With your donation, we will:

123

  1. Construct a community solar garden for at least 3 low and moderate income households to join, reducing their cost of electricity. $19K of our $20K goal will go directly to buying, installing, and applying for a community solar permit to construct the solar garden. Any funds raised above our goal will be used to increase the size of the garden to benefit more households.
  2. Push towards a 100% renewable future by offsetting and replacing traditional carbon-based energy production.
  3. Create a new platform at GreenSeed to efficiently crowdfund many more renewable energy projects in the future. The final $1K of our $20K goal will be used to build out this online platform.

By tapping into the collective spirit and resources of millions of people, we can together make an outsized impact on both local communities and the world.
