Short Story

As Baltimore Natives, we love our city and its people however,  We are aware of its deficits and lack of equitable information and resources within our community.  Growing up in Baltimore  we both  faced many challenges along the way. This fueled our desire to ensure that our youth were exposed to endless opportunities and the necessary resources to ensure access to all opportunities in life. It became way too common in our city  that many students were graduating from student to adulthood and had no tangible support, insight, or resources to navigate and overcome the challenges that lie ahead in adulthood.

Candie-I am proud to state that I am an Entrepreneur who owns several successful businesses and am thriving in the Real Estate Field. However these accomplishments did not come easy. I was fortunate to meet people along the way who shared with me information, resources, and provided insight. Looking back on  the trajectory of my career, I can attest that formal education was not the defining factor. It was as I stated before the connections and relationships that I maintained and nurtured that helped me take off.

Veronica- At 36 years old I am pleased to say that as a college graduate I was exposed to different choices  along the way. Early exposure of higher education alongside  various programs (The Baltimore City College High School and Gilman Upward Bound ) afforded me the opportunity to pick a career field in which I am able to do something I love; serving my city and improving my community. While making  a living to provide for myself and my family. However it was not my college degree that  really paved the way. It was exposure to resources, information, and the many community members and mentors that aided in my success.

That is why we founded and are passionate about ” Be The Change You Want To See”. We want to reach back, be that connection for the youth to bridge the gap and arm the youth with vital information that the school system isn’t touching on, and local government isn’t providing . Our course focused on Financial Literacy, Health and Wellness, Investing in yourself and community, All the different avenues you can take to achieve your goals, and so much more were a huge success.

This August we were fortunate to host an amazing program targeting youth, ages 14 to 19. The week-long program served as an impactful, and life-changing experience for those who participated. Throughout the week, the youth learned about and actively discussed various topics including: real estate; how to start a business; stocks and investments; financial literacy (starting, building and maintaining credit); mental health and wellness; how to engage with law enforcement while being Black in America; as well as, how to actively participate in the law-making process in their community, and beyond. Various speakers from throughout Baltimore City provided educational and informational presentations to the youth daily . This was such a phenomenal program, and we are working towards making it available to youth throughout Baltimore City. The program would operate two days a week for 6 weeks—between October and November— teaching the following topics as an after school program.

Day 1- Dream Big –The Impact of change. Vision and goal planning

Day 2- Addressing Mental Health in the Black Community

Day 3 –  Mind, Body, and Soul -Wellness /Nutrition education and activities

Day 4-Change your Coins to Cash – Financial Education

Day 5-Power of Credit- Financial literacy

Day 6- Stock Day– Stock Market Education

Day 7-Real estate – How to build wealth through real estate

Day 8 –Build Your Own Business– Business.

Day 9- Being Black in America– Knowing your rights.

Day 10 More Than One Road to Success -College, Vocational Trades, Career Industries

Day 11 Getting Involved in Your Community– Activism.

Day 12- Program Close Out and Celebration

We seek to raise $3,700 for this program. This would provide both dinner and snacks, as well as $25 worth of stocks for each youth participant. These funds would also cover the cost of a venue, and speakers/presenters for the entirety of the six-week program. We are asking for your help by donating to our program, Be the Change You Want to See. If you are unable to give a monetary donation, another way to support is by spreading the word about this grassroots program. Thank you in advance for all of your support!
